Lyla and Hope walked down the Hill path in silence. Sometime late last night, Lyla had quit trying to talk to Hope. Now she thought of Gill’s map, which she’d found in the message rock early this morning. She’d hidden it in the Aerie, in her stack of old Pirate Jackmans. As kids, she and Gill had left each other messages in a rock by the stream, but until the other night, when Gill suggested that they use the rock again, she had forgotten about it and all their little notes: “Meet me in the tree”; “Gathering berries for dinner”; “Captured!” The map he’d left her said that he could meet at dusk this evening. Dusk was such a long while away.
